PRIVATE OWNERS

The following is very much a listing based on work-in-progress, now made much more difficult since I retired from London University. Since it will take longer than I imagined to complete my researches on private collections identified before 1850 it seemed appropriate to offer what evidence I have collected to date, even in its necessarily unfinished state. It is based on A.N.L.Munby's annotated copy of the 1915 British Museum catalogue of auction sales; wills and inventories notified to me by scholars working in the field (notably Elizabeth Leedham-Green); bookplate evidence (I have still to complete checking the immense Franks catalogue); returns from libraries that have provenance indexes (a large number still to check); and a multitude of other sources. It will be found that auction sale evidence frequently duplicates names listed in the Country House Database. I trust that any users who discover errors and/or omissions will be kind enough to notify them to me. The task of identifying private owners of books is an endless one, and every new source checked unfailingly yields a modest harvest of new collectors. For collectors of books and manuscripts belonging to the original Society of Antiquaries founded in 1586 under the patronage of Archbishop Parker see the separate file
