THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
A microfiche project to reproduce
the major texts for the study of all aspects of nineteenth-century history. With detailed
catalogue records in MARC format.
Editorial Director:
R.C. Alston
This project is, perhaps, the largest edited corpus of texts and accompanying bibliographical records ever undertaken. Unlike other comparable projects (e.g. that for the Eighteenth Century) it is not simply based on an existing catalogue (such as ESTC), but rather strives to reproduce the best and most important texts for a wide variety of subjects. Since it started in 1985 over 22,000 texts have been reproduced, and the bibliographical records, now available for searching on the Web, have been created to a high standard. In fact, I believe they constitute the best and most sensitively coded records available anywhere. The following information may be useful to those with book-history interests:
Heading: established according to AACR2 rules
Title: transcribed very fully (and accurately!)
Imprint: transcribed fully, with addresses given and
separate sub-fielding for printers
Pagination: detailed, including illustrations
Provenance: given where identified
Notes: detailed on various aspects of original
Subject: LCSH subject headings provided
as well as topical headings
