Research on this multi-volume work started in 1958. The first volume appeared in 1965, and eighteen numbered volumes have been published to date (total of 29 physical volumes). Volumes I-X are out of print. A reprint of Volumes I-X published in 1973 is out of print. A few copies of the volumes marked with * are still available at the prices stated.

The compiler of this massive bibliography has been awarded: The Bibliographical Society of London’s coveted Gold Medal; the Library Association’s Walford Medal (twice).

An article on the history of this project was published in the May Bulletin of the Henry Sweet Society. The compiler was Editor-in-Chief of the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) from its inception in 1976 to 1993. He is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. When completed the Bibliography will have recorded over 25,000 works in 100,000+ editions/issues, with 250,000+ locations in over 1000 libraries throughout the world.
